A Little Island

There are many islands in the eastern Upper Peninsula. Some are large and have villages and towns on them. Some are so small they have only a few trees! Your day trip may include an excursion to see one of the following islands.

Mackinac Island - the closest island to St. Ignace and accessible only by passenger ferry, private boat or airplane. For more details, click on the navy blue ribbon above marked "Mackinac Island".

Les Cheneaux Islands - found to the north and east of St. Ignace. These islands are off-shore of the villages of Hessel and Cedarville. Driving north on I-75 or Mackinac Trail, then turning east on M-134 will bring you to the villages. A small bridge connects to residential Hill Island, while all the others require a private boat or vessel for passage.

Drummond Island - is located to the east of Les Cheneaux further down M-134. This residential island is reached by a car ferry from Detour Village, the town at the tip of the eastern Upper Peninsula. The island has its own village in the interior and is a unique, woodland getaway.

Bois Blanc Island - is located in the Straits of Mackinac east of Mackinac Island. You can reach this huge island by car ferry from the town of Cheboygan, east of Mackinaw City in the Lower Peninsula. A few hardy residents live there and it is a wild, forest covered island.

Sugar Island - is located in the St. Mary's River channel just east of Sault Ste. Marie.  It is easily accessible by car ferry. This residential island has many homes and shorelines.

Neebish Island - is located in the St. Mary's River channel just south of Sugar Island.  It too is easily accesible by car ferry and is residential.

Beaver Island - is located in northern Lake Michigan, off-shore of Charlevoix some 23 miles.  It is accessible by air and car ferry.
